Did you know that booking a lion dance for your baby’s 100-day celebration is not as uncommon as you may think? Chau Luen Athletics is proud to bring traditional lion dance to this important day in your child’s life. With our experience with other major life celebrations (wedding and tea ceremony lion dances), we can bring the magic of this traditional Chinese artform to your baby on their special day.

With services tailored to make your 100-day party memorable (and safe), Chau Luen Athletics is your best choice for your baby’s first lion dance.
Why do people book lion dances for their baby’s 100-day celebration?
The main reason that people book lion dances in general is to bring blessings for good fortune or luck. This is more than just a birthday lion dance—traditionally, the baby and mother are most vulnerable in the first 100-days after childbirth, making this a major milestone to commemorate.
Normally, this is marked by plenty of symbolic gifts for the newborn and perhaps some cultural or superstitious customs. Food like dyed red eggs may be served, and often, red envelopes are given by older relatives.

This is where lion dances tie in. With all the cultural symbolism and blessings of good luck, a lion dance is an excellent way to tie in both. Lion dances are traditional blessings that are meant to bring good fortune and ward off evil spirits.
Having a lion dance performance at your baby’s 100-day celebration is the perfect way to kick start your child’s healthy and prosperous life. Plus, people enjoy honouring tradition in a meaningful way (rather than just buying some red decorations off of Temu).

Safety considerations for your baby’s 100-day lion dance celebration
Of course, one of the first things we’re often asked when it comes to performing in front of a baby (or small child) is the loudness of our drumming. Lion dance percussion roles are a central part of the performance, scaring away evil spirits and providing the beat to which the lion dances to.
That said, we always recommend hearing protection for infants and young children, and we gladly provide infant-specific earmuffs for your baby, free of charge.

Safety is our top priority, both for our performers and for our guests, so the lions will avoid getting too close or showering lettuce directly at your child if requested.
As with all of our lion dance performances, we will also tailor the routine to suit your venue, as well as any custom requests we can reasonably accommodate. Do you have a theme for your 100-day celebration? Is the venue high enough for some acrobatics? We’ll do everything possible to make the show perfect.
Choosing colours
Do you want to go with a traditional red lion that symbolizes prosperity and good luck? Or are you excited for your first boy or girl and want either a baby blue or bright pink lion? Perhaps you want to go off the wall and choose a different colour that will represent your baby, family, or theme. Fortunately for you, Chau Luen Athletics offers many different lion colour options to choose from.

Our most popular lion dance colours for baby showers are blue, green, red, and yellow, but our team will show you a full selection of our costumes after your first discovery call.

Baby 100-day celebration FAQ
What can I expect for my baby’s 100-day lion dance?
Although the lion dance routine is custom for all of our performances, we generally will follow a routine of an entrance, bowing to the baby and parents, a lucky lettuce toss, a scroll presentation, and time for family and friends to take photos.
Could a lion dance be too loud, dangerous, or scary for a newborn baby?
We provide ear protection for your child and avoid any movements that can make contact with the baby. We can also avoid going too near the baby if you’re concerned that it will be scared by the lions and can tone down the drumming intensity if it makes you more comfortable.
What is the significance of a lion dance at a 100-day celebration?
In Chinese culture, the lion symbolizes luck, protection, and strength. Including a lion dance in your baby's 100-day celebration is a way to bless the child with good health, happiness, and a bright future. It also acts as a way to connect with your roots and traditions.
