Vancouver’s Premier All-female Lion Dance Team

Redefining tradition and inspiring the next generation

Breaking barriers

For centuries, women were not permitted to lion dance because it was seen as a physically demanding sport and not something suitable for them. Although times are changing, many schools still forbid women from learning lion dance, let alone perform it. Even today, we hear anecdotes of some well-known clubs in Vancouver still hesitating to send women to perform for weddings or corporate events.

Though we respect the traditions of our martial arts lineage that stretches back almost 200 years, we know that tradition should never be a barrier to talent. For decades, we have been opening our doors to anyone, irrespective of their gender, to learn lion dance, dragon dance, and kung fu with us.

Representation matters

We strive to inspire the next generation of talented female lion dancers from the youngest age. Our goal is to let our female athletes shine in the lion heads and not relegate them to holding banners or playing percussion.

Since our first female performers took to the stage over 20 years ago, we have been met by the cheers of young girls and their families who have told us how inspiring it was to see a woman perform in a sport that was normally reserved for men.

Are you ready to join us? We'd love to have you on our journey.

Just as talented as the men

We don’t put women in shows just to claim we champion diversity – everyone in our club trains lion dance the same way that our forebears had done since the 1800s.

Strength, footwork, and stamina are all prioritized so our women’s team can put on the same level of elite performance as their male counterparts. Our women’s team performs weddings, corporate events, and even does demanding routines like bench routines and high lifts.

There is no drop in skill level or technical ability with our women’s team, and the team’s dedication to their training reflects that.

It takes strength, agility, and acrobatic endurance to embody the spirit of a lion. Lions are full of vigor and life, just like the women I get to dance beside.
