At Wushu BC’s 25th anniversary banquet, Chau Luen Athletics was proud to be among the 15 distinguished kung fu clubs invited to celebrate with them in Richmond. It was the first Wushu BC Banquet since 2022 and this time, we brought out a dragon to go with our lion dance and Choy Lee Fut kung fu demonstrations.
It was a spectacular night of martial arts for the local Vancouver scene, as well as a great chance for our team to meet up with old friends and share our Choy Lee Fut kung fu with hundreds of attendees.

Mass lion dance with representatives from across BC
An evening at a kung fu banquet would not be complete without a lion dance. We sent a lion to greet all the other kung fu clubs’ lions, and in total, there were six lions on stage at once. Andrew, one of our Sifu’s disciples, was joined by Leanne, showing off our Futsan (佛山) style of lion dance rooted in the Choy Lee Fut tradition.

Dragon dance with our friends at the Hoy Ping Athletic Club
For this performance, we teamed up with some of the talented young students from the Hoy Ping Athletic Club, one of our sibling clubs. They were led by Dai Si Baak (大師伯) Howard Wong and Si Sook (師叔) Waymen Wong.

We had a new face that had been practicing hard with us to make their dragon dance debut as well. Quinn, who joined a few months ago, took the stage for his first performance with Chau Luen Athletics.
He joined a renowned group of dragon dancers with years of experience, including some of the members of the world’s first all-women’s Fire Dragon team. The dragon was led by our Dai Si Hing Shawn, who guided the performers with the dragon pearl.

The crowd cheered as the dragon whirled its way around the stage, sweeping effortlessly back and forth between the lions.
Kung fu demonstrations
Since this was an evening that highlighted the best of kung fu in Vancouver, we also took the opportunity to show off some Choy Lee Fut forms.
Chau Luen Athletics student Eva led things off with their demonstration of Siu Mui Fa (小梅花). They had previously performed this at a workshop during the Fire Dragon Festival, but this was the first time demonstrating it at a banquet. The pressure was on since this was a room full of kung fu masters, but they did an excellent job and learned a lot for their next performance.

Next up was Andrew, who performed Yi Jong Baat Gwa (義壯八卦). Though Andrew has almost become synonymous with his broadsword form, this was a chance to show off his crisp execution and technical ability with an empty-hand form.

Shawn was the last disciple to perform, electing to perform Dai Do (大刀). The Dai Do (Chinese glaive) is always one of the most impressive weapons due to its sheer size and the amount of strength and coordination required to perform with it. Shawn’s years of experience really shone through as he drew a ton of applause from all of the sifus in attendance.

Last but not least, Sifu Michael performed Baat Gwa Sum (八卦心), another empty-hand form that he had been perfecting for years. Clad in his traditional Chinese cheongsam, the lightning fast but perfectly timed strikes showed why he is among the top sifus in Vancouver.

Join us next time at the 2027 Wushu BC Banquet!
It was a truly enjoyable experience to attend and meet up with some of the best martial artists in BC. Some of our newer members were also able to attend and watch the talented demonstrations from the other clubs, which left them impressed and motivated to train even harder than before.

The next Wushu BC Banquet is scheduled for 2027, and we’ll be there for sure. We hope to see everyone there again and soak in all of the talent of our kung fu brothers and sisters!
